A Trip to the Abyss 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Far Side of the Sun and Moon
Genevieve Quick’s A Trip to the Abyss 20,000 Leagues Beneath the Far Side of the Sun and Moon (2013) is constructed from over 50 science fiction films, ranging from early silent classics like Stuart Paton’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea (1916) to more recent releases like Danny Boyle’s Sunshine (2007). The video explores the relationship between the deep sea and outer space, in regards to the technologies, narrative constructs, and the bubble worlds that we create to deal with the oxygen-less atmospheres. The two channel installation is presented on stacked broadcast monitors. The scenes in the top video are extracted from films that take place in outer space, while the lower video takes place underwater.
